Precautions for the Use of Portable Load Banks in Generator Testing
Time:2026-04-15
Portable load banks are core equipment for generator testing. They can simulate real electrical loads and accurately test key indicators such as generator output stability and load-carrying capacity, widely used in power operation and maintenance, emergency power supply guarantee and other scenarios. Standard use of this equipment is a prerequisite for ensuring test safety and accurate data; otherwise, it may easily lead to equipment damage, test distortion and even safety accidents. The core precautions are as follows:
Before testing, check the rated voltage, power and other parameters of the load bank and generator to ensure matching. At the same time, inspect the load bank's shell, wiring and cooling system, and confirm that the generator is fully preheated. The environment should be well-ventilated and dry, away from flammable and explosive materials. Outdoor testing requires rainproof and lightning protection measures, and ventilation should be strengthened in confined spaces. Operators must receive professional training, wear insulating protective equipment, and be familiar with equipment operation and emergency shutdown procedures.
During testing, follow the principle of "wiring first, then power on; power off first, then wiring", gradually increase or decrease the load, with each loading not exceeding 20% of the rated load, and continue after parameters are stable. Monitor the equipment's operating parameters throughout the process. If abnormal voltage, current, equipment abnormal noise or overheating is found, stop the machine immediately to troubleshoot faults. Reasonably control the test duration to avoid long-term overload or no-load operation.
After testing, clean the surface and cooling vents after the load bank cools down, sort and store the cables, inspect equipment components and store them properly. Regularly maintain and calibrate the load bank, and power it on monthly when idle for a long time. At the same time, standardize the retention of test data and reports to provide reference for subsequent operation and maintenance. In special scenarios, take anti-freezing and high-temperature prevention measures for equipment in outdoor high and low temperature environments; emergency generator testing should avoid affecting on-site power supply; load should be reasonably distributed for multi-unit parallel testing.
